One could practically see the temper tantrum that was sure to materialize from hard-line conservative House members when over the weekend House Speaker Mike Johnson cut a deal with Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to back a top-line funding total key to preventing a government shutdown. The Biden-Harris campaign and other groups circulated and posted images of three bills Johnson has sponsored that the Democrats said would "ban abortion nationwide." Already, six states – Michigan, California, Vermont, Kentucky, Kansas and Montana – have passed referendums that either enshrined abortion rights or rejected efforts to undo the right to abortion. The House of Representatives remained leaderless on Thursday without a clear path to elect a speaker after Rep. Jim Jordan's bid to secure the gavel failed in two consecutive votes this week. Jordan has said he plans to remain in the speaker race, but his bid appears dead in the water with more than 20 Republicans opposed to him assuming leadership of the chamber. Jordan has said he will remain in the race "until we get a speaker." Republicans have a narrow majority in the House, which means Jordan or any other GOP candidate can only afford to lose four votes within the party. There is discussion among some Republicans about empowering Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina as speaker until the party can coalesce around a permanent replacement.

Representative Jim Jordan, the hard-line Republican from Ohio, does not plan to force a third vote on Thursday on his bid to become speaker after running headlong into opposition from a bloc of mainstream G.O.P. Instead, Mr. Jordan will endorse a plan to empower Representative Patrick T. McHenry of North Carolina — the temporary speaker whose role is primarily to hold an election for a speaker — to carry out the chamber’s work through Jan. 3. In the meantime, Mr. Jordan will continue trying to build support to become speaker. After he failed to win a majority on Tuesday, Mr. Jordan was defeated again on Wednesday when the number of Republicans refusing to back him grew. With little hope of making up the lost ground, Mr. Jordan called for a closed-door meeting of Republicans on Thursday morning to discuss his next steps.
